When real estate executive Gloria Caulfield told the University of Central Florida's graduating class on 8 May that AI was the next industrial revolution, the boos started almost before she had finished the sentence. A day later at Middle Tennessee State University, record executive Scott Borchetta tried a similar line, telling students that AI is rewriting production as we sit here, and was drowned out in the same way. The clips spread across social platforms within hours. The reaction has been consistent enough that NPR ran a piece offering 2026 commencement speakers a simple piece of advice: do not bring up AI.
A generation that can see the door closing
The heckling is not abstract anxiety. It is a response to a job market that has visibly narrowed for new entrants. Nearly nine in ten graduates in the class of 2026 say they are worried that AI or automation could replace entry level roles, up sharply from 64 percent a year earlier. A Quinnipiac University poll found 81 percent of Gen Z believe AI will decrease job opportunities, making them the most pessimistic generation surveyed despite being the most fluent with the tools. Postings on Handshake, a platform built around early career hiring, are down 2 percent year on year and sit 12 percent below their pre pandemic level.
Not just vibes
The data behind the mood is real. The New York Fed puts the unemployment rate for recent college graduates aged 22 to 27 at 5.6 percent, above the rate for workers overall, an unusual inversion of the historical pattern. BlackRock chief executive Larry Fink has warned he is worried this year's graduates could face the highest unemployment among new entrants in years, even without a recession. The concern is not only about today's cohort. MIT's Andrew McAfee has argued that companies automating away their junior roles risk hollowing out the very talent pipeline they will need to fill senior positions a decade from now.
Why the anger lands
Part of what gives the booing its charge is a sense that the technology is being built without the people it most affects. The same Quinnipiac polling found just 5 percent of Americans feel AI development is being led by organisations that represent their interests. For graduates who spent four years and considerable money preparing for careers, being told from a podium to embrace the thing reshaping those careers can read as celebration of their own displacement. The reaction is a reminder that how the AI transition is communicated matters almost as much as what it does, and that a generation entering the workforce is unwilling to be sold optimism it does not yet feel.
